WFBSC secures observer status at UN Commission

Last Thursday, the World Federation of Building Service Contractors secured observer status at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe GHS subcommittee in Geneva.

This subcommittee is responsible for global policy on the regulation of chemical products including cleaning chemicals.

SCA delivers binding offer to acquire Georgia-Pacific's European tissue operations

SCA has delivered a binding offer to acquire Georgia-Pacific's European tissue operations, with sales in 2010 amounting to EUR 1.25bn (SEK 11.9bn). The offered price is EUR 1.32bn (SEK 12.6bn). Georgia-Pacific's acceptance of this offer is subject to consultations with works councils where appropriate.

Ecolab, Nalco shareholders approve merger

Shareholders from both Ecolab and Nalco Holding Company overwhelmingly approved the merger of the two companies yesterday. The merger will create a global leader in water, hygiene and energy technologies and services, offering premier product solutions, what is claimed to be the industry's largest and best-trained sales and service force, coverage in more than 160 countries, and combined 2011 annualised sales of more than $11 billion.

Study highlights serious problem of hospital-acquired infections in Africa

Research funded by the Wellcome Trust has highlighted the scale of the problem of hospital-acquired infections in sub-Saharan Africa. The study, published today in the 'Lancet', suggests that bloodstream infections acquired while in care might contribute to one in every 20 deaths that occur in children in hospitals in the region.

Welcome to the first issue of Cleanzine for 2012 and a Happy New Year to all of you. We've had a slightly longer break than normal and a great deal has happened in the world in that time - much of it not good - so rather than reflect on it, let's get on with the news from the cleaning industry.

And what better way to begin than to bring you a story about an expanding Canadian business and an image that warmed the cockles of my heart on this overcast Winter's day (at least it is here in England)...

New Year rings new heights for Canadian 'Men In Kilts'

* MenInKilts_Kilt_Crew_On_Truck.jpgMen In Kilts, a window and exterior cleaning company, has announced today it will be opening four more franchises in three months, adding to three franchises currently in operation. Alberta and Oregon are next on the list, with B.C. and Washington already in business.

The company was founded in 2002, with the first Vancouver franchise opening its doors in 2010. Since then, the franchise model has taken off.

BTA 2011 Innovation Award results

More youngsters enter FM profession as average salaries near US$100,000 pa

Today's facilities management professional is, on average, college educated, manages more than one million square feet of space and multiple employees, has experienced a growth in job responsibilities over the past two years, and is enjoying a base salary increase of 8% from 2007 levels, according to the results of an International Facility Management Association salary and demographics survey.

The 'Profiles 2011 Salary and Demographics Report', based on a survey of 4,353 facilities professionals from 45 countries around the world, points to a career path that compensates its practitioners well. Combining base salary and bonus pay, the average facilities professional now pulls in US$99,578 in total compensation annually - up from US$91,766 in 2007. Even those entering the profession do wel

Ecolab Germany to relocate to new high-tech innovation centre in Monheim am Rhein

Ecolab has announced plans to relocate its German offices and research centre in Duesseldorf to a new innovation hub in the city of Monheim am Rhein, 10 kilometers south of Duesseldorf. The new location, Im Weidental, will house Ecolab's European RD&E facility as well as its local sales & marketing functions.

The Monheim am Rhein facility will feature a customer innovation centre, where Ecolab's innovative programme and service solutions will be featured. Ecolab expects to begin relocating employees in November 2012 and finish in the first quarter of 2013.
