Something was bothering me while I was chatting to Principle Cleaning Services' Chief Executive Douglas Cooke, at the Golden Service Awards last month, but I couldn't quite put my finger on what it was. A jokey comment from another guest soon enlightened me. Doug was growing a moustache! Quick to point out that this new embellishment was not down to a mid-life crisis, Doug explained that he was part of the 'Movember' movement., whereby each November, thousands of men around the world grow moustaches to raise awareness of - and funds to help fight - prostate and testicular cancer and other cancers that affect men. On 'Movember' 1st, men register at Movember.com with a clean-shaven face and then for the rest of the month they are 'Mo Bros', with their growing moustaches effectively making them walking, talking billboards for the cause. Through their actions and words, they raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men's health. Having never knowingly come across a Mo Bro previously, I know from experience that it works!
The funds raised are directed to programmes run directly by Movember and its men's health partners, The Prostate Cancer Charity and the Institute of Cancer Research. Together, these channels work to ensure that Movember funds are supporting a broad range of innovative, world-class programmes in line with the movement's strategic goals in the areas of awareness and education, survivorship and research.
